Bale Moote chutney(ಬಾಳೆ ಮೂತೆ ಚಟ್ನೀ)

If you have a banana tree in your garden, nothing goes to waste once the tree bears fruit.
Banana stems can be used to make sambhar and palya.
Out of banana blossoms, palya or chutney can be prepared.

Today, I’ll share the recipe to make chuntey from banana flowers/blossoms.

Ingredients:

Banana blossom – 1
red chillies – 4-5
tamarind pulp – size of gooseberry
oil – 2 tbsp
salt to taste
coconut – 1 small cup

Seasoning:

Oil – 1 tsp
mustard seeds – 1 tsp
urad dal – 1 tsp
hing (aka asafoetida) – 1 pinch

 Method:

  • Remove the outer 5-6 petals of the flower. We are only gonna be using the innermost portion.
  • Chop the inner most bud into small pieces (small enough that your mixer grinder can manage)
  • Fry the chopped flower in oil, on a medium flame for upto 5 min. Basically till they become soft.
  • Fry red chillies separately in oil for 2 min.
  • In a mixer jar, add fried blossoms, fried chillies, salt, tamarind pulp and grind it.
Note: do not use a lot of water. Just enough to keep the chutney like consistency
  • Scoop out all the ground mix to a bowl.
  • Prepare tadka/oggarane with oil, mustard seeds, urad dal and hing.
  • Add tadka to the ground mix.
